Mortar & Pestle Radio
(2016)
CNC Millwork Machining, Clay Throwing, Arduino, RFID, Vibration Sensing
The Mortar & Pestle Radio is an experiment in tangible interaction and materiality. Inspired by the tonal qualities of ancient wooden instruments and stoneware, it’s a re-imagination of the common FM Radio.
Cyclically moving the pestle in the mortar changes stations, while rasping the wooden midsection adjusts volume. Functions are programmed in Arduino, utilizing RFID & vibration sensing. Ceramic components are hand thrown, and the millwork parts are CNC machined.
