“Designing Together, Miles Apart” is as series of online co-design workshops that leverages online video conferencing technology, self tracking robotics (Sony Toio), and play-tested creativity exercises to enable co-design among young children. The project began in 2020 in an effort to study and develop new methods of remote learning during lockdown.

Our team developed a physical toolkit that was shipped to participating families. The toolkit included an android tablet, 3D printed mirror stand, table top play area and props, and a pair of Sony TOIO robots. Children were able to control the robots on other people’s tables remotely, leading to delightful telepresence interactions. We ran a series of online workshops and play-tests with this system, to determine the advantages and limitations of telepresence learning. Paper Link
